100 Libraries – Healing Rainbow Light for Oregonians is a project by internationally renowned Solar Spectrum artist Peter Erskine to design and donate permanent, site-specific rainbow light installations to 100 public libraries across Oregon.

Peter Erskine is an artist known for his Solar Spectrum Art installations in major international locations such as European train stations and the Ancient Roman Forum. Now, he is focusing on smaller, community-centered spaces—particularly public libraries.

The project began in 2023 when Erskine was inspired by the phrase “100 Libraries” whispered by his muse. He immediately understood the significance of the idea and embarked on a mission to bring healing rainbow light to local libraries.

Erskine’s installations use prisms and mirrors to capture and manipulate natural sunlight, creating immersive rainbow light environments that shift and change throughout the day.

Yes, each piece is designed as a permanent, site-specific solar art installation that enhances the library space without requiring electricity.

Eight installations are being completed this summer, with twenty more currently in various stages of design.

At a time when libraries face funding challenges and are at the center of cultural debates, Erskine’s project seeks to provide a sense of beauty, peace, and emotional well-being in these vital public spaces.

The installations are being designed and donated by Peter Erskine himself as part of his artistic and personal legacy.

We invite you to step into the rainbow and experience the art at upcoming openings:

  • Jefferson Public Library – Saturday, September 28 @ 10:00 AM
  • Independence Public Library – Tuesday, October 1 @ 4:00 PM
